Memoir Moment: Remembering Jay Cohen, a Dear Friend

Jay Cohen, psychiatrist, researcher, and advocate known for his empathy and tenacity.

This photo was taken at the beach in Del Mar and is the quintessential photo of Jay with his last dog, Teesha. In addition to loving the ocean and dogs, Jay was an astute researcher and critic of big pharma. He eschewed the notion of “one size fits all” in prescribing drugs, always titrating by starting with the lowest dose. He wrote numerous books and was beloved by his patients for his warm and caring approach to therapy. I want to honor and remember him today, November 3rd his birthday. I miss him greatly.

Memoir Moment: Remembering a Dear Friend

Sue Prosen (left), psychologist and teacher extraordinaire, known for her sense of humor and empathy

This photo was taken many years ago at the then Wild Animal Park when Sue visited San Diego. She always went out of her way to cultivate and deepen our friendship.  In a past life, we were professors at Johns Hopkins University and great friends who had many adventures together. Sue was one of the brightest people I’d ever known and cracked a sharp wit. I wanted to honor and remember her today, her birthday. Sue, I miss you greatly.
