Memoir Moment: Beer at Southwestern Yacht Club

During our Tuesday outing, BJ had a thirst for a beer at a marina. We both longed for a water view with boats. So we headed to Pt. Loma and landed at Southwestern Yacht Club. We wandered into the restaurant and thought we’d take a peek at the nautical view. Low and behold, the waiter agreed to seat us and had a yacht club member host us as his guest, so BJ could order her beer. The waiter treated BJ like royalty–and could not have been more considerate. That act of kindness made my day and I’d like to think that all our nonagenarians are treated with such honor and respect.

Have you hugged a nonagenarian today?

Memoir Moment: A Cross-Country Visit with Gramps

Here’s nonagenarian, David, smiling during a memoir moment with his beautiful granddaughter, Cory Andrus, who traveled to San Diego from Massachusetts to visit him.

A joyful reunion, indeed!

Memoir Moment: Serenading Elsa at Oakmont of Pacific Beach

I had the pleasure of joining my dear friend, Elsa, during an Oakmont of Pacific Beach Happy Hour. Here’s singer, Marty Murphy, serenading her with my all time favorite song, Funny Valentine. Marty was accompanied by Gloria Smith, who is indeed, glorious at the keyboard.

It was so great to see Elsa and others singing along and dancing to the music. What a wonderful way to spend an afternoon–with an amazing nonagenarian sharing the delightful music.

Memoir Moment: Meet a Golden Couple

Meet Barbara and David celebrating 50 years of marriage, from San Juan to San Diego.

Living in Puerto Rico, they hobnobbed with the likes of Xavier Cugot, Abbe Lane, and other celebrities of that era. After retiring to San Diego, they remain active and are avid Padres fans.

Read an excerpt from David’s memoir written with stepson, Mark, here.

Memoir Moment: At 97 Years Old, BJ Greets Young and Old at the USS Midway Museum

Former Marine, 97-Year-Old BJ, Still Patriotic and Proud

I was with BJ yesterday when she greeted visitors, young and old, at the USS Midway Museum. She described her role as a Marine during WWII.  She signed her memoir for those who wanted to take her story home with them. She is so amazing.

Memoir Moment: Elsa Packs for Her Move to Her New Home

My dear friend and neighbor, Elsa, contemplated what to pare down and what to take with her to her new home at Oakmont in Pacific Beach. She treasures her cards/letters from her children and grandchildren and has them boxed and ready to go. What treasured keepsake would you take with you?

Memoir Moments with BJ

BJ and I have an amazing friendship that dates back to 1994. When I first moved to San Diego I rented her downstairs apartment at the beach and she lived upstairs. She was 75 at the time and has been a confident and role model for all these years. We have shared many wonderful memories together. Now that she’s in her upper 90s, our time together is more precious than ever. She’s amazing and we’re still making wonderful memories together. You’ll see some of them here.
