Keeping Seniors Safe: Preventing Falls

Falls Can Be Disastrous, Especially Among Seniors

Did you know that falls are the 2nd leading cause of accidental deaths worlwide? And that in the US, 55% of falls occur in the home? Each fall costs, on average, $19,000. Worse, among seniors, falls can lead to broken bones and head trauma that begin a downward health spiral.

As I learned at a Glenner Symposium, “The Prism of Dementia: Realizing Opportunities,”  there are many steps we can take to make our homes “fall proof.”

Here’s one slide from presenter Lisa Rodriguez, OTR/L V.P. Clinical Operations Therapy Specialists.

These are among other suggestions that will make any home safer–for everyone.

Many thanks to Mindy Baker, Ed Long, and Michelle Mullen of the Glenner Center for organizing this most informative symposium.
